Patch Tuesday for September 2021 has started. Microsoft is offering new Windows 10 cumulative updates. Security is the focus, but that's not all. We also have some bugfixes.
This great monthly maintenance gives birth to new cumulative updates. They target the Windows operating system but also other company software. Concerning security Microsoft fixes 32 vulnerabilities in Windows 10 v1903 and 1909. We have two critical flaws and 30 flaws considered important.
The same results are announced for Windows 10 20H1, 20H2 and 21H1. The two critical flaws relate to vulnerabilities affecting the Windows script engine and the Windows WLAN AutoConfig service. The first allows memory corruption and the second allows remote code execution. They are identified under the references CVE-2021-26435 and CVE-2021-36965.
Windows 10 and the Thusday Patch
Along with security Redmond is also tackling a few bugs. Under Windows 10 “all versions” we have the resolution of a problem affecting PowerShell. It generates the creation of an infinite number of child directories. The failure appears if the Move-Item command is used to move a directory to one of its children. The volume will then fill up and the system will stop responding.
Microsoft specifies that two problems persist under Windows 10 2004, 20H2 and 21H1. After installing the cumulative update KB003690 of June 21, 2021, some PCs may not be able to install a new update. The operation ends with the error “PSFX_E_MATCHING_BINARY_MISSING”. Then using a custom ISO image to install Windows 10 can remove Microsoft Edge Legacy, but not replace it with Chromium-based Microsoft Edge. In this case it is necessary to proceed manually with its installation.
