Sony Xperia 1 III: 5 things you should know before buying the smartphone

The Sony Xperia 1 III is proof that patience is a virtue. The flagships of the company have been quite disappointing so far, but the most recent model is very impressive. In fact, I'm a fan!

Still, I think you should know a few things before you get started with this smartphone. The Sony Xperia 1 III is a smartphone for a very specific target group. In that regard, it is good to know what you are getting and that is what this review is for.

Sony Xperia 1 III: what do you get?

The Sony Xperia 1 III is an advanced smartphone that, thanks to its price tag of €1299, is seen as the showpiece of Sony. Something to which the specifications refer. No expense has been spared with this device.

To give you a good impression of what exactly the Sony Xperia 1 III has to offer, I have listed the most important specifications for you:

    • 6.5-inch 4K HDR OLED-beeldscherm
    • Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G processor
    • 12GB of RAM
    • 256GB of storage capacity (expandable up to 1TB with MicroSD)
    • 4500mAh battery (fast charge with 30W)
    • 12 megapixel Wide camera
    • 12 megapixel telefotolens (70mm)
    • 12 megapixel telefotolens (105mm)
    • 12 megapixel ultra-wide camera
    • 0.3 megapixel depth sensor
    • 8 megapixel selfiecamera
    • Weight: 186 gram
    • Size: 165mm x 71mm x 8,2mm

Furthermore, the Sony Xperia 1 III is equipped with a fingerprint scanner in the purchase, the device is equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack and it runs on Android 11. But that is certainly not the only thing you need to know.

Sony Xperia 1 III: 5 things you should know

I've been able to use the Sony Xperia 1 III as my default phone for the past week. Last Tuesday, I put my SIM card in the device and worked extensively with it. To test the device as well as possible, I just used it as I would with all my phones. I called, checked my email, updated my Instagram, texted some friends and watched movies and series.

These things struck me in that week and, in my opinion, you should know about the device:

#1 The ideal screen for movies and series

The display of the Sony Xperia 1 III is ideal for viewing from movies and series. Seriously: you will not find a better screen in this area in the market. Logical, because the device is completely focused on it. And that manifests itself more than just in CinemaWide 21:9 ratio.

The screen is set to 4K HDR and that cannot be changed. That causes some problems here and there, but it ensures that you always get the best image quality. It is mainly the DCI-P3 value that brings images to life and the Sony Xperia 1 III handles it very well with the Maker mode.

With that functionality, content is shown exactly as the creator had in mind. It doesn't matter whether they need a BT.2020 color gamut or 10-bit HDR colors for this: the phone offers it all.

Well, and the fact that the Sony Xperia 1 III then has a 21:9 ratio is just a bonus.

    # 2 Cinema Pro in Photo Pro

That certainly applies to Sony's experience in the camera market. The Sony Xperia 1 III, just like its predecessors, lends sufficient functionalities in the camera area. Thanks to Cinema Pro and Photo Pro, you can also make optimal use of this.

You're basically in control, just like you would with an Alpha camera from the company. The Sony Xperia 1 III offers the possibility to adjust the aperture, ISO, shutter speed and focus in detail to your liking. Something that ensures that you get the most out of the camera, both in video and in photography.

However, I must confess that the maximum camera performance of the Sony Xperia 1 III is not that impressive. Of course you take beautiful photos and get more out of them than the average smartphone, but for the price of €1299 you can. In that respect, you can best compare it with the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and the iPhone 12 Pro Max: two devices that easily win this battle.

So the choice is huge, but the end result could be better.

    #3 Incredibly finely designed

What couldn't be better, and where the competition loses 100% to the Sony Xperia 1 III, is the way in which this smartphone is designed. Due to the elongated design, the device fits more comfortably in the hand of any smartphone, although I do believe that this is a matter of taste. Personally, I find it very nice to hold in the hand in any case.

The weight of only 186 grams contributes to this. Due to the size of the device, it feels really light, but it still comes across as premium. That is also allowed, because the Sony Xperia 1 III is made of glass both at the front and at the back. Corning Gorilla Glass Victus is used on the front and Corning Gorilla Glass 6 on the back.

What I also really like about the design are the screen edges of the display. Where in the past these were really too thick, they are perfect at the moment. Not too thick, not doable, but just right.

The fact that the Sony Xperia 1 III uses an LED light for notifications and a 3.5mm headphone jack is only a bonus.

#4 Battery poor due to settings

The Sony Xperia 1 III is a wonderful smartphone with a lot of impressive specifications. Something that without a doubt has an impact on the battery. The device is equipped with a 4500mAh battery and you can easily take it with you for a whole day. Although you should not do too much with your smartphone.

On average I save a screen time of 4 hours on this device, but let's say that if you try hard you can get 4.5 hours out of it. I don't think that is much for a smartphone of €1299 to be honest. Especially not, because you don't really do much about it. For example, you can disable MakerMode, but it is not possible to scale back the 4K resolution. Viewing your social feeds therefore costs quite a bit of power.

Fortunately, charging with a capacity of 30W is very smooth.

#5 Unfortunately not a good deal

The great thing about the Sony Xperia 1 III is that Sony has finally managed to bring an imposing and impressive smartphone to the market. With the previous two models, the company always got it wrong and this time it has corrected it.

Only this is a smartphone for a very specific target group. And if you don't get excited about certain functionalities, such as the control over the camera system or the elongated display, then I'm afraid this is too niche for you.

Something that for the price of €1299 will apply to the majority of consumers. And I actually think that's a shame.

Sony Xperia 1 III: buy or leave?

The Sony Xperia 1 III is a wonderful smartphone that I really enjoyed last week. From the software to the design and from the display to the camera system, I really had a lot of fun. Only I am aware that for €1299 I can just have more fun which makes me more enthusiastic in the first instance.

Are you willing to pay a lot, but don't feel like walking around with the same as the rest of the consumers? Do you watch a lot of movies and series on your phone or do you like to have full control when taking photos? Then the Sony Xperia 1 III is the dream for you.

If you want to get the very best deal or get the best of the best, then you unfortunately have to pass up this device. Even if you leave something really cool.
