Motorola Defy: this smartphone is practically indestructible

Where smartphone manufacturers pull out all the stops in terms of of specifications and camera systems, Motorola thought it was time to really solve a problem. Phones, despite the latest innovations, are still quite fragile. We certainly can't say that about the Motorola Defy.

This smartphone is a so-called “Rugged Smartphone” that is built to take a beating. For example, this model is equipped with a double-sealed housing for extra water resistance and safety. Very impressive on paper, but how does this work in practice?

Motorola Defy: a wrecking ball of a smartphone

For €329 you get the Motorola Defy, which you can cautiously call “a wrecking ball of a smartphone”. The device certainly resembles a modern Nokia 3310, with which you used to be able to knock down entire buildings. Now that is of course all a bit exaggerated, but the feeling is quite similar during daily use.

The build quality of the Motorola Defy is extremely solid. You actually have the feeling that there is an excellent case around the device, while this is actually the standard housing. As a result, the device certainly does not win a beauty prize, for example due to the thick screen edges, and does not lie optimally in the hand. But that is not at all what the model is intended for. After all, it is a smartphone that is fully focused on protection and security, making it simply the ideal smartphone for people who work in construction, for example.

    More than protection

Now, of course, this smartphone offers more than just protection. The Motorola Defy is equipped with a number of fine features that make the device excellent for daily use. Something that allows this smartphone to distinguish itself in this small market. The Defy is equipped with, among other things:

    • 6.5-inch LCD display
    • Snapdragon 662 processor
    • 4GB of RAM
    • 64GB of storage capacity
    • 5000mAh battery
    • Fast charging with 20W
    • Triple camera system
    • 48 megapixel main camera
    • 2 megapixel macrolens
    • 2 megapixel depth sensor
    • 8 megapixel selfiecamera
    • Weight: 232 gram
    • Size: 169,2mm x 78,2mm x 10,9mm

The smartphone certainly does not offer the most powerful processor, the most RAM and the largest storage capacity. Using the device fully for gaming is not the best idea in that regard, but for daily use the smartphone offers you enough.

The same goes for the camera system. This model features a limited system that, quite frankly, does its job just okay. Photography enthusiasts don't have to deal with this, but the average consumer who occasionally takes a selfie is baked.

Those lesser specifications ensure that the 5000mAh is really a bull's eye. The device easily lasts for a day and a half and with economical use it can even be used for two days. Given the target group of the Motorola Defy, I expect that the battery can be used for two days rather than a day and a half.

    Motorola Defy: hit the mark

Personally, I won't be able to enjoy the Motorola Defy very much and I'm honestly guessing that the general consumer feels the same way. Nevertheless, this smartphone can be called a bull's eye. Why? Because it knows how to serve its target group perfectly.

As mentioned, the Motorola Defy is focused on protection. Something that the smartphone is able to offer excellently. This is the ideal smartphone for people who work in sectors such as construction or the hospitality industry, and who mainly use their smartphone to WhatsApp and call.

This of course applies to more devices in this price range, but the Motorola Defy offers something unique with its excellent housing. And Motorla just does that very well.

    • Not very powerful
