Huawei Watch 3: the debut of HarmonyOS with e-Sim, temperature sensor and Gps [recensione]

Huawei Watch 3 is the first device to debut HarmonyOS 2, the operating system on which the Chinese manufacturer has been working since 2017 and which is destined to peermeare all future products, from tablets (on the way there are MatePad 11 and MatePad Pro) to laptops, passing through earphones and monitors. We tried the Classic model for a couple of weeks, available at 399 euros, but Watch 3 you will also find it in the Active version (369 euros and with a greater sporting connotation) and Elite (449 euros, equipped with an elegant bracelet).

    Display, and icon carousel

Watch 3 is shows up with a nice 1.43 inch Amoled display, with a resolution of 466 × 466 pixels and a density of 326 ppi. The display, touchscreen, allows you to interact with a tap, with a long press, with swipe, just like a mobile phone panel. The first two (pleasant) novelties are represented by the digital crown and the setting of the carousel of icons. The first has been placed as the main side key and is a touch-sensitive button that allows you to scroll through the menu items, but also to zoom in and zoom out from the main icon screen. Icons that are visually and physically reachable on a single screen. From the latter you can select with a tap on the screen, move, scroll or even manage from the digital crown. A second side button, on the other hand, located further down, is dedicated to the preferred function (we have set the heartbeat detection, so as to always reach it with a single press).

Under the chest we find the sensors, which is enriched with a sensor capable of measuring skin temperature.

    e-Sim Stand Alone

Another novelty of Watch 3 is the presence of an e-Sim which effectively makes the smartwatch independent from the phone, allows you to make and receive phone calls using the speaker and microphone on the speaker, and to carry out data traffic. At the moment, in Italy only TIM supports stand alone eSIMs on the entire Huawei Watch 3 Series. It can be activated by contacting a TIM shop. The e-Sim does not support SMS for now.

    AppGallery su Watch 3

Among the native icons you will also find that of App Gallery, the Huawei content and services store that counts in Italy 12,000 titles in 18 different categories. By connecting the watch to WiFi or using the SIM connectivity, you can download your favorite applications, so that you always have them available on your wrist. The operations are a bit slower than those performed on a smartphone, but they allow you to enrich the Watch 3 with additional content.

And speaking of apps, the watch connects to the tried and tested app Health, from which it is possible to read the information collected, change faces, buy it for a fee, update the device and keep track of all the measurements. The faces (even the default ones) are among other things very well designed and inside them contain icons and interactive buttons capable of launching various functions.

    It GPS

Watch 3 integrates a two-channel GPS, which ensures excellent accuracy. It supports GPS, Glonass, Galileo, Beidu and QZSS network satellites. Also in this sense it is completely independent from the telephone. You will be able to exercise and download the synchronized data of your movements once back at the base.

Still on the front of the collection of data relating to one's physical activity and state of health, there are more 100 professional loosening modes, monitoring of the heartbeat and of SpO2 (the percentage of oxygenation of the blood), lo stress and the state of the sleep in its different phases (Rem, deep, light and continuity of the different phases).

It is the real test of all devices. The manufacturer declares 3 days in 4G (therefore with the e-Sim) and 14 days with super energy saving, which however inhibits many of the functions of the watch. As always, we used Watch 3, leaving all the main functions active and on average we arrived at 5 days, without really sparing us any operations. A good result, considering the battery power (450 mAh), the presence of the new OS and the many interactions introduced.

Positive notes also for charging. In the package there is a wireless charging base that fully charges the Watch 3 in about 1 hour.

    Judgment on Watch 3

Overall we liked this Watch 3 very much, so much so that we gave it our Award. Shapes and design are pleasant, the weight (54 grams plus the strap) has never been a problem so much so that the watch can be worn even at night without discomfort. The new layout of the icons is intuitive and vertical scrolling is left to the settings and submenus, while all the most important things are always just a click away.

There is a good level of customization that we wanted to show you in the video and that allows you to set the clock according to your lifestyle or the most used functions throughout the day.

Among the shortcomings we point out the absence of NFC so … no electronic payments with the watch. On the other hand, the monitoring of SpO2 (blood oxygenation) and skin temperature is very useful. Finally, another extremely useful function is the detection of falls with the possibility of sending an Sos.
