Jon Prosser unveils the technical characteristics of the new Google Pixel smartphones.
The month of May was marked by the double leak of the design of the future Google Pixel 6. A very marked design first unveiled by Jon Prosser, who has not always been right with his “revelations”, then confirmed by Onleaks, which has historically been shown to be much more reliable, thus lending credence to Prosser's sources.
Today Jon Prosser returns with information on the technical sheet of the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Since his sources seem to have got it right the first time, we are inclined to believe him on this new information.
OLED, generous battery and large camera
Here is the information revealed by Jon Prosser concerning the Google Pixel 6, codenamed to Oriel.
- Screen: 6.4 inch AMOLED
- Photo module: 50 megapixels + 12 megapixels (ultra wide angle)
- Front camera: 8 megapixels
- Batteries: 4614 mAh
- SoC : developed by google
- Storage: 128 or 256 GB
- System: Android 12
With these characteristics, the Pixel 6 would have nothing to do with the Pixel 5 of 2020 who played the card of reason. The latter approached a mid-range smartphone with a much milder price than that expected of the Pixel 6.
Jon Prosser also reveals information on the Google Pixel 6 Pro, codenamed Raven.
- Screen: 6.71 inch Plastic OLED
- Photo module: 50 megapixels + 48 megapixels (telephoto) + 12 megapixels (ultra wide angle)
- Front camera: 12 megapixels
- Batteries: 5000 mAh
- SoC: developed by Google
- Storage: 128, 256 or 512 GB
- System: Android 12
In addition to the generous battery integrated into the two devices and the emphasis placed on the photo through what we have seen of the design and the first information we have on the different definitions of the sensors, we can especially read the confirmation that the SoC used on these new smartphones would be developed internally by Google. We will have to wait for the presentation to find out more: is it really an SoC entirely designed in-house like Apple does, or rather a marketing trick like the Microsoft SQ1, a simple clone of a product Qualcomm.
Up to 5 years of Android update?
What puts us on the trail of a real investment by Google in its SoC is found in another piece of information unveiled by Jon Prosser. According to the leaker, Google would be ready to commit to 5 years of updates for these two new smartphones. We imagine that this means 5 major versions of Android which would bring us all the same to Android 16. If this promise is confirmed, Google would finally put itself at Apple's level with regard to the software monitoring of its products.
To achieve this, the firm will undoubtedly need to master the end-to-end technique and in particular the design of the SoC to internally develop the drivers adjusted to each version of Android.
See you in October for a Made By Google event where we should know everything about the new Pixels.
