DLSS on Unity: Nvidia takes a step further with the adoption of the very popular engine

Developers will be able to more easily integrate DLSS technology into their games thanks to its adoption by Unity and Unreal Engine.

Since its launch in 2020, Nvidia's DLSS technology has been gaining more and more attention. As a reminder, DLSS is an image upscaling technology by artificial intelligence. Its application in video games is rather bluffing since it essentially makes it possible to increase performance in games. The recipe is simple: calculate the image in low definition, which is simpler for our graphics card and use DLSS to artificially increase this definition. The result is a game that is both fluid and beautiful.

Unfortunately, this technology remains the property of Nvidia, which must therefore convince developers to integrate it into the PC versions of their games. Nvidia has a good relationship with the developers, but it can still be tedious. To promote this adoption, Nvidia convinced Epic Games to directly integrate DLSS support to Unreal Engine in February. A significant advance that allows developers with this engine to apply DLSS more easily.

    Unity adopts the technology

On the sidelines of the GTC, Nvidia announced on April 14, 2021 that the Unity engine in turn integrated DLSS natively. Along with the Unreal Engine, the Unity engine is undoubtedly one of the most widely used in the world. This means that many developers will now be able to integrate DLSS.

For now, neither Unity nor Nvidia have unveiled a list of the first games that will integrate the technology thanks to this engine update. With this announcement, Nvidia takes a new lead against AMD, which has not yet really unveiled its response to DLSS, and Microsoft which must also give news of its DirectML solution. The latter should speak on April 20 to discuss its novelties reserved for video game developers.
