One of the many benefits use artificial intelligence (AI) is to us help to look at social problems from a different perspective. While there has been a lot of noise about how AI can be misused, we must not overlook the many ways AI can be used for good. Our global issues are complex, and AI provides us with a valuable tool to increase human effort to find solutions to troubling problems. Here are the 10 best ways to use artificial intelligence for good.
Artificial intelligence, driven by deep learning algorithms, is already being used in healthcare. In particular, AI's imaging capabilities are promising for cancer identification and screening, including breast cancer. Artificial intelligence is also used to predict the development of diseases across the health network. The group on Mount Sinai used AI algorithms based on deep learning to predict the development of diseases with 94% accuracy, including cancer of the liver, rectum and prostate. Thanks to published research on cancer, clinical trials, and drug development, there is a wealth of data that can help AI review and then guide healthcare decision-making.
Save the bees
Did you know that The World Bee Project uses artificial intelligence to save bees? The global bee population is declining, and that is bad news for our planet and our food supply. In partnership with Oracle, The World Bee Project hopes to learn how to help bees survive and thrive by collecting data via Internet of Things sensors, microphones and hive cameras. The data is then transferred to the cloud and analyzed by artificial intelligence to identify patterns or trends that could guide early interventions for bees to survive. Finally, artificial intelligence makes it easy to share real-time information globally and take action to save bees.
Tools for people with disabilities
Another way that artificial intelligence is used for good is to help people with disabilities overcome them. Using AI and augmented reality, Huawei has created StorySign, a free mobile application that helps deaf children learn to read by translating text into sign language. The company has also created Track.Ai, an easy-to-use, affordable device that can identify visual disturbances in children, so that treatment can begin before the disturbances cause blindness. Facing Emotions, another AI application created by Huawei, translates emotion into short and simple sounds. The application evaluates the emotion it sees on someone else's face in order to help blind people “see” the emotion of the person they are talking to. The app uses the phone's rear camera to assess nose, mouth, eyebrows and eyes and artificial intelligence to analyze the expression on those facial features and what emotions they convey – contempt, anger, fear, disgust, sadness, happiness and surprise.
We can make huge progress in solving one of the world's biggest problems with the support of artificial intelligence. Climate change is a huge problem, but several thought leaders in AI and machine learning believe that technology could deal with it. Machine learning can improve climate informatics – machine learning algorithms run about 30 climate models used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Artificial intelligence can also help educate and predict the impact of climate change on different regions. Researchers from the Montreal Institute for Algorithm Learning (MILA) use GANs (generative secondary networks) to simulate severe storm damage and rising sea levels.
Another way AI should work on the planet is in conservation efforts and it allows conservatives with underfunded opportunities to analyze data cheaply. A team from the Kauai Endangered Seabird Recovery Project from the University of Hawaii used AI to analyze 600 hours of sound to detect the number of collisions between birds and power lines. In another attempt to stop the decline of endangered species using AI, the Center for Artificial Intelligence at the University of Southern California Society uses an unmanned flying vehicle to spot poachers and locate animals. Data collected by drones are sent back to be analyzed by machine learning tools that use game theory to help predict the activities of poachers and animals. AI also uses Wild Me and Microsoft to automatically identify, record and track endangered animals such as whales by analyzing photos that people upload to the Internet.
Fighting world hunger
One of the most reliable tools in the fight to end the world hunger crisis is artificial intelligence. It can analyze millions of data to determine the perfect crop, develop seeds, maximize current yields, and precisely control herbicide application. Many applications are already in use, but here we will highlight the Nutrition Warning System (NEWS) which uses machine learning and large data to identify regions at increased risk of food shortages due to crop failures, rising food prices and droughts.
Reducing inequality and poverty
While one of the criticisms of AI algorithms is human bias that can be introduced through distorted algorithms or training data sets, AI can actually help reduce inequalities. The University of Chicago Data Science and Public Policy Center’s Aequitas project and IBM’s AI Fairness 360 are open source packages that can track and correct biases. The clever text editor Textio, which makes job descriptions more inclusive, helped one publisher increase the percentage of female recruits to 57 percent, from just 10 percent earlier. Imperial College of London is training AI to recognize inequalities based on street images of urban living conditions, with the aim of finally using that information to improve the situation. Similarly, AI is analyzing satellite imagery in a Stanford University project to predict regions of poverty, which could affect economic aid. Another way AI / machine learning works to overcome poverty is through IBM's Science for Social Good Simpler Voice directive on overcoming illiteracy.
Spot the “Fake News”
That's right: AI is an engine that pushes “fake news” to the masses, but Google, Microsoft and the huge efforts of the Fake News Challenge use AI (machine learning and natural language processing) to automatically assess the veracity of articles. Because of the trillion posts, Facebook has to follow and because of the inability to do the job manually, the company also uses artificial intelligence to find words and patterns that could point to fake news. Other tools that rely on AI in content analysis include Spike, Snopes, Hoaxy and many others.
Evaluate medical images
In general, artificial intelligence is used in many ways to improve health systems. German company Siemens Healthineers is a leading medical technology company that integrates AI into many of its innovative technological technologies. One of these technologies is AI-Rad Companion.4, an assistant radiologist who supports routine reading and measurement tasks on medical imaging. AI increases the review of medical recordings in order to alleviate the part of the workload of radiologists who are overloaded. Another innovation is the AI-Pathway Companion5. This tool integrates insights from pathology, imaging, laboratory and genetics to provide status for each patient and suggest next steps based on the data.
Set upgrade priorities
At the USC Center for Artificial Intelligence in Society (CAIS), AI has been deployed to discover how to maintain the Los Angeles water supply in the event of an earthquake. As the city's utility infrastructure ages, the project aims to identify strategic areas for improving the pipeline network, so that critical infrastructure (that which serves hospitals, evacuation centers, fire and police centers) is a priority for upgrading with earthquake-resistant pipes. This is a problem where AI is adept at solving by simulating different scenarios to find the best solution.
